Greetings parents and Edgerton community from the Edgerton Elementary School!! As you would guess the K-6 building is a whirlwind of activities. The tremendous teaching staff is working diligently to maintain high expectations of student learning and growth. With state of Ohio mandates such as Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Ohio Achievement Assessments(OAA), Gifted Testing(CogAt and Iowa), and the Edgerton District Report Card, our dedicated teachers invest unending hours into our students.
Thank you to all parents who attended our first round of Parent/Teacher Conferences this fall. We were excited to offer you a new form of registering your sessions by the use of Sign-Up Genius over the internet. The response to this new format was very positive and well received, evidenced by 72% of our students having a parent/guardian attend the conferences. Without question, the more effective we are in keeping the lines of communication open between teacher and parent, the better we can be in consistently ensuring student academic success. I encourage you to contact teachers regularly with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child.
As I write this column, we are kicking off our Red Ribbon Week activities at the elementary school. The National Red Ribbon week has been in existence since 1988 with a sole purpose to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. The National Family Partnership (NFP) and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver the message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Week campaign. Did you know that 500,000 people die from drugs each year in the U.S.? Did you know that 30,000 people die from driving from abusing alcohol, as well as drinking and driving? Did you know that 31% of all 9th grade students have tried smoking cigarettes? This year’s theme is: A Healthy Me is Drug Free! Based on these alarming statistics, we as educators and parents have much to do in raising awareness with our children.
As I close I would like to wish our Edgerton Elementary Quiz Bowl team the best of luck this Thursday night as they compete in the Williams County contest hosted by Stryker Local Schools. Quiz Bowl members are: Eric Gruver, Lance Harris, Megan Rendleman, Kale Merillat, Autum Lantz, and Aislinn Trejo. Thank you students and Mrs. Rice for your hours of dedication after school in preparation for this event and best of luck Thursday during competition.
As always, never hesitate to call my office if there is anything I can do to make your student’s educational experiences at Edgerton Elementary a more positive one.
Yours in education,
Kermit Riehle, Principal
